Shine! — Prayer Guide — Democratic Republic of Congo

Today we are praying especially for the Democratic Republic of Congo — one of the most extraordinary, and one of the most heartbroken, nations on earth. A country God loves deeply.

The DRC is vast beyond imagination. It is the second largest country in Africa, home to over 100 million people and more than 450 distinct people groups. It holds the Congo Rainforest — the second largest on earth — and rivers so deep and powerful they have no equal in the world. Beneath its soil lies an estimated $24 trillion in mineral wealth — coltan, cobalt, gold, and tin that power the phones and laptops of billions around the globe. The DRC is one of the richest countries on the planet. Its people are among the poorest.

Nearly 95% of Congolese identify as Christian — making this one of the most Christian nations on earth. Yet in eastern Congo, believers are being massacred for their faith. Armed groups with ties to the Islamic State target churches, behead believers, and abduct children. The M23 rebel group — backed by neighbouring Rwanda — seized the major cities of Goma and Bukavu in early 2025, unleashing a wave of violence that left thousands dead. A US-brokered peace deal was signed in Washington in December 2025, but the ceasefire has been repeatedly broken — and even this week, fighting and withdrawals continue. Over 5.8 million Congolese are displaced. Twenty-eight million face acute hunger. Five million children are out of school.

And yet — the Church is still standing. In the ruins of Goma, bishops hold services. In remote forest villages, the Gospel is spreading. On university campuses, thousands of students are gathering for prayer. The Church in the DRC is not a defeated church. It is a church that will not give up.

So let's pray with faith — because God sees every displaced child, every grieving family, and every believer holding on to Jesus in the dark. And He is listening.

1. EXALTING JESUS

Jesus to Be Enthroned Across the Congo

Pray for: Jesus Christ to be exalted as Lord across every province of the DRC — from Kinshasa to Goma, from the Kivus to the Congo Rainforest. Pray for the name of Jesus to be lifted above every armed group, every corrupt leader, and every spirit of violence and division. Pray for a fresh wave of the Holy Spirit to sweep across this immense and suffering nation.

"Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth." Philippians 2:9–10

A Spirit of Hope and New Life

Pray for: The Congolese people — who have endured decades of conflict, exploitation, and suffering — to experience the resurrection hope of Jesus Christ. Pray that the wounds of history — from the horrors of King Leopold's colonial rule to the long years of civil war — would be met by the healing power of God. Pray that a new generation of Congolese children would grow up knowing they are loved and chosen by God.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Jesus Glorified Through His Church

Pray for: The Church in the DRC — battered but unbroken — to reflect the true beauty and power of Christ. Pray for church leaders to stand firm in truth, to preach boldly, and to serve sacrificially. Pray for the Church to continue its vital role in education, healthcare, and community — as the most trusted institution in the nation — shining with the light of Jesus in every dark place.

"To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen." Ephesians 3:21

Let's Pray Together... "Jesus, we love You. Be the King of the Congo. Bring Your peace and Your light to every corner of this land."

2. THE WAR IN THE EAST — HOPE FOR PEACE

For over 30 years, eastern DRC has been torn apart by armed conflict. In January 2025, the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group seized Goma, capital of North Kivu. In February they took Bukavu. In December 2025, a US-brokered peace accord was signed in Washington — but the ceasefire has been repeatedly broken. Even today, M23 fighters are withdrawing from some areas under US pressure, while civilians cautiously celebrate in the streets. The peace is fragile. Millions need it to hold.

A Just and Lasting Peace

Pray for: The Washington Peace Accord to become real peace on the ground — not just words on paper. Pray for President Félix Tshisekedi, Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, and M23 leaders to honour their commitments. Pray for the withdrawal of all Rwandan troops, the disbanding of armed groups, and the restoration of Congolese sovereignty. Pray for US, AU, and international mediators to press for justice, not merely stability.

"Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people." Proverbs 14:34

Protection for Civilians and the Displaced

Pray for: The 5.8 million people who are internally displaced across the DRC — the largest displacement crisis in Africa. Pray for the hundreds of thousands who returned home in 2026 to find their homes destroyed or occupied. Pray for aid organisations to have the funding and access they urgently need. Pray for the mass graves discovered near Uvira in February 2026 to lead to accountability and justice — not silence.

"He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing." Deuteronomy 10:18

An End to the Curse of Blood Minerals

Pray for: An end to the cycle of exploitation that has driven conflict for decades. The DRC's cobalt and coltan — in the phones and laptops of billions of people worldwide — finances weapons and warfare. Pray for just and transparent mining that benefits the Congolese people. Pray for the nations of the world — including those whose technology depends on DRC minerals — to act with justice and accountability toward this nation.

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute." Proverbs 31:8

Let's Pray Together... "Jesus, please bring real peace to eastern Congo. Protect every family and every child who is in danger right now."

3. CHRISTIANS UNDER FIRE

The DRC is nearly 95% Christian — yet it now ranks 29th on the Open Doors World Watch List, rising six places in one year alone. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) — an Islamic State affiliate — is responsible for systematic and horrific attacks on Christian communities. Between July 2024 and July 2025, nearly 400 Christians were recorded as killed. The true number is far higher.

Believers Targeted for Their Faith

Pray for: Christians in North Kivu and Ituri province who live with the daily reality of ADF violence. On 12–15 February 2025, more than 70 believers were found dead in a Protestant church near Kasanga — beheaded by ADF fighters. On 9 September 2025, more than 70 more were massacred at a funeral wake in Ntoyo village. "Our people are being slaughtered simply because they refuse to abandon their faith," said Rev. Samuel Kambale from North Kivu. "Yet even in the face of death, we will not lose hope. We cling to Christ, who remains our refuge and strength." Pray for protection, courage, and the peace that only Jesus gives.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:10

Christian Leaders Who Speak Truth

Pray for: Bishops, pastors, priests, and church leaders across the DRC who dare to speak against violence, corruption, and injustice — and face threats, surveillance, and abduction for doing so. Pray for the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) and the Church of Christ in Congo, who have called 2025 a "Year of Peace and Good Coexistence." Pray for their voices to be heard and their courage sustained.

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers... will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38–39

Let's Pray Together... "Jesus, please protect Your people in the Congo. Like the early disciples, help them be brave for You even when they are afraid."

4. THE HUNGER CRISIS — CHILDREN AT THE BREAKING POINT

Twenty-eight million Congolese face acute food insecurity — one of the highest figures anywhere in the world. Nearly half of all children under five are stunted from chronic malnutrition. More than four million children urgently need nutritional treatment. Five million children have no school to go to. This is not just a crisis of war — it is a crisis of abandoned children.

Children Dying of Hunger

Pray for: The 4.18 million children under five who are suffering or expected to suffer acute malnutrition across the DRC. Pray especially in North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri, and Tanganyika, where emergency hunger levels are at their worst. Pray for WFP, UNICEF, and local Christian organisations to receive the funding and access they desperately need. Pray for every malnourished child by name to be seen, fed, and held — by human hands and by God's.

"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14

Five Million Children Without School

Pray for: The five million Congolese children who cannot access education because of poverty, conflict, and displacement. Give thanks for the Catholic Church and Protestant churches who, without government support, keep schools open across the country. Pray for funding, teachers, and safety. Pray for every Congolese child to have the chance to learn — and to encounter the love of Jesus in the classroom, the church, and the community.

"He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap." 1 Samuel 2:8

Let's Pray Together... "Father God, please feed the hungry children in the Congo. Help them to go to school and to know that You love them and have a plan for their lives."

5. THE CHURCH & GOSPEL MISSION

The Church as a Beacon in the Darkness

Pray for: The Church in the DRC — described by Bishop Martin Gordon as "still the one remaining institution that can be trusted." Give thanks that in summer 2025, evangelism campaigns in four Goma secondary schools saw over 6,000 children hear the Gospel — and 1,000 come to faith. Give thanks that in Walikale — a remote forest archdeaconry two days from Goma by motorbike — the church has grown from a handful of groups to 17 churches with their own land and buildings since 2024. The Gospel is advancing even in the hardest places. Pray for more!

"The Lord watches over you — the Lord is your shade at your right hand." Psalm 121:5

The DRC as a Sending Nation

Pray for: The Church in the DRC to not only survive but to multiply — training indigenous evangelists, planting churches among unreached communities, and sending missionaries beyond its own borders. Pray for theological training and discipleship to deepen, so that the Church is grounded in truth and not swept away by false teaching or trauma. Pray for a new generation of Congolese missionaries to rise up — bold, Spirit-filled, and ready.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19

Let's Pray Together... "Jesus, help Your church in the Congo to be strong and brave, and to share Your love with everyone — even in the hardest places."

6. THE NOW GENERATION

Even amid the chaos, a generation of young Congolese is rising. In January 2025, nearly 4,000 students gathered at the Université Protestante au Congo for Conquest — a day of prayer, evangelism, and declaring themselves conquerors in Christ. In May, 1,500 more gathered for Upper House. In June, 3,000 raised their voices at Proclaim. God is moving among Congo's young people.

Children and Young People to Encounter Christ and Become 2BC Champions

Pray for: Children and young people across the DRC to encounter Jesus personally — to know their identity in Him and be empowered by His Spirit to shine in the darkest places. Pray especially for children who have grown up knowing only conflict, displacement, and fear — that they would experience the love and security of their Heavenly Father. Pray for a generation of 2BC Champions to rise: knowing, loving, and sharing Jesus.

"And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions." Joel 2:28

Healing and Strengthening Families on Mission for God

Pray for: Families torn apart by conflict, displacement, and the trauma of violence to be restored by the healing power of Jesus. Pray for mothers raising children alone after losing husbands to war. Pray for child soldiers who have been released or escaped armed groups to find healing, community, and a new future in Christ. Pray for the Church to be a place of belonging, restoration, and hope — raising up 2BC Champion Families on Mission for God.

"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15

Let's Pray Together... "Jesus, help children in the Congo to know who they are in You. Heal their hearts and give them hope for the future."

7. PROTECTION & SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Healing for Survivors of Sexual Violence

Pray for: Women and girls across eastern DRC who have been subjected to sexual violence used as a deliberate weapon of war. UN officials have described the scale as among the worst in the world. Pray for survivors to receive medical care, trauma support, and the love of Jesus that heals the deepest wounds. Pray for stigma to be broken, for justice to be done, and for the Church to be a place of safety and restoration — not judgment — for every survivor.

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:36

Standing Against the Powers of Darkness

Pray for: Freedom from the spiritual strongholds that have kept the DRC in cycles of violence, corruption, and exploitation for generations — including the ADF's ideology of terror, the spirit of ethnic hatred rooted in the legacy of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, and the greed that feeds the conflict minerals trade. Pray for the power of these strongholds to be broken by the name of Jesus. Pray for epidemic diseases — cholera, measles, malaria, Ebola — to be halted and for the nation's broken health system to be restored.

"The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds." 2 Corinthians 10:4

Let's Pray Together... "Jesus, please protect Your people in the Congo. Push back the darkness and fill this land with Your light and Your peace."

8. STRATEGIC PRAYER MOBILISATION

Intercessors Arising Across the Nation

Pray for: A movement of prayer to rise across every province of the DRC — from university campuses to rural churches, from displacement camps to the halls of government. Pray for prayer networks to grow and unite across denominational lines. Pray for the Congolese church to lead in intercession for their nation — and for the global Church to join its voice with theirs. The people of Congo need the world's prayers now.

"Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly." Joel 2:15

The Congo as a Blessing to Central Africa and the World

Pray for: The DRC to rise as a centre of Gospel mission to its neighbours — including South Sudan, Central African Republic, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and beyond. Pray for Congolese missionaries and evangelists already serving across borders, often with very little, to be sustained and multiplied. Pray that the God-given wealth of the Congo — not just its minerals but its faith, its courage, and its Gospel fire — would be a blessing to the nations.

"And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." Matthew 24:14

Let's Pray Together... "Lord, help us to pray and bring Your peace to the Congo and to all the nations of Central Africa."

9. Declaration over the Democratic Republic of Congo

Lord Jesus, we lift the Democratic Republic of Congo to You.

You are the God who sees every Christian huddled in a church while armed fighters circle outside. You see every displaced mother carrying a child through the forest. You see every hungry child who has never tasted peace. You see every pastor standing at a pulpit with a price on his head. And You love them all.

Let Your light shine across this vast and beautiful land.

Protect the persecuted. Feed the hungry. Heal the broken.

Bring a just and lasting peace to eastern Congo. Expose and break every network of violence, corruption, and exploitation.

Raise up wise and courageous leaders. Bring healing to communities torn apart by ethnic hatred and decades of war.

Raise up 2BC Champion Children, Families, Churches, and Schools across this Nation to be "On Mission with You."

Raise up a generation who Knows You, Loves You, and Shares Your Love with Others.

May Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
